A Milestone for the Unitary Patent – Benoît Battistelli

In a recent blog, Benoît Battistelli, the President of the European Patent Office (EPO), discussed the United Kingdom’s recent announcement that the government intends to ratify the Unified Patent Court (UPC) agreement. Battistelli describes this news as a ‘key milestone in Europe’s quest to put into operation a new form of patent protection in Europe.’ Provided that the outstanding ratifications of the UPC agreement (Germany and the UK) are achieved quickly, the first unitary patent could be realised by the end of 2017.
