Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to progressive disability. Worldwide, more than 2.3 million people have been diagnosed with this lifelong condition. Statins are derived from fungi and most commonly used to help lower the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the blood. In the 2-year study, people receiving the higher dosage of Statins suffered 43% less brain volume deterioration compared to those on a placebo. While there is still much more research to be done, these highly promising results could end the decades long wait by many MS sufferers and deliver the cure.
