Can Statins end the decades long wait for MS sufferers?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to progressive disability. Worldwide, more than 2.3 million people have been diagnosed with this lifelong condition. MS is a condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation, or balance. Currently there is no cure for MS, however a recent UK study discovered the potential of Statins as a treatment to slow down the rate of MS progression.

Statins are derived from fungi and most commonly used to help lower the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the blood. In the 2-year study, people receiving the higher dosage of Statins suffered 43% less brain volume deterioration compared to those on a placebo. While there is still much more research to be done, these highly promising results could end the decades long wait by many MS sufferers and deliver the cure.

Minesoft’s patent solutions can speed up the rate of innovation and aid the discovery of life changing medicines for incurable diseases like MS.

Chemical Explorer was developed by Minesoft, taking advantage of Chemical NER (Named Entity Recognition) technology to add chemical structure search capability throughout the full text of millions of patent documents. Patent data can be interrogated in different ways: similarity, substructure and exact structure searching are available, with structure input possible from chemical name, trade name, SMILES, Mol file, or by drawing the structure.

Recent developments of Chemical Explorer include the new family report function. Key information from the results can be reviewed efficiently, users can also easily identify the number of times a structure has occurred in each text section of the patent (TI/AB/DSC/CL).
