World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day, celebrated on the 8th of June each year, aims to raise awareness of the role oceans play in our everyday lives and inspire action to protect them and learn how to sustainably use our marine resources. Our oceans are our planet’s lifeline, they connect, sustain and support mankind. Securing the ocean’s wellbeing will have a positive impact on many global issues including, climate change, poverty, unemployment and more. This year’s World Ocean Day theme is Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean, with this in mind let’s take a look at some innovative initiatives and solutions developed to protect and preserve our oceans.

UpLink

Innovation and collaboration are essential to securing the future health of our oceans. UpLink is the open innovation platform of the World Economic Forum aiming to create bridges within the innovation ecosystem. Via this platform, UpLink helps bring together entrepreneurs, investors, corporate partners, experts and other organisations to enable the development of innovative solutions and support positive systemic change for people and planet.

Arc Marine

Arc Marine, founded in 2015, joined UpLink in 2021 to help upscale their business and protect marine life with their innovative solutions. The British startup has developed carbon-neutral and plastic-free Reef Cubes to help restore and protect reef ecosystems. Reef Cubes can help boost large-scale coral restoration projects and provide eco-friendly marine habitats while also protecting man-made assets.

Oceanium

Founded in 2018, Oceanium is a biotech startup utilising an innovative and proprietary bio-refinery process to develop high demand products from sustainably farmed seaweed including the food ingredients of protein and fibre.

The founders believe that seaweed farming could create jobs in coastal communities and developing countries, be used to feed livestock and help to end global food insecurity… There’s no surprise that Oceanium was awarded the People’s Choice Award at the World Economic Forum’s Virtual Ocean Dialogues event in 2020!

Raising awareness and celebrating these innovations and initiatives on World Oceans Day is vital to ensure such important work that helps secure the future of ocean health continues.
